This Tuesday: Buncombe County Commissioners Meeting 8/19/25--arrive by 4:30 PM
We stand firmly against the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on our campus. Universities should be spaces of learning, safety, and belonging for every student, regardless of their immigration status. ICE’s presence creates a climate of fear that disrupts education, silences voices, and threatens the well-being of our peers, friends, and neighbors. At UNCA, we believe our community must protect one another from intimidation and unjust enforcement actions. We call on the administration to commit to a clear, public policy barring ICE from conducting enforcement activities on campus without a warrant and to safeguard the privacy of all students. Our campus should be a sanctuary for education and solidarity, not a site of surveillance or detention.
We also oppose the installation of AI-operated surveillance cameras. Universities should be spaces of learning, safety, and belonging for every student, regardless of their immigration status or identity. ICE’s presence creates a climate of fear, Likewise, AI surveillance erodes trust, chills free expression, and undermines the sense of privacy that students need to thrive. At UNCA, we believe our community must protect one another from intimidation, unjust enforcement actions, and constant monitoring. We call on the administration to commit to a clear, public policy to remove AI-operated cameras, and to safeguard the privacy of all students. Our campus should be a sanctuary for education and solidarity—not a site of surveillance, detention, or fear.
